As VIAVI continues to lead and support the 1.6Tb ecosystem, we now see a distinct transition from the first generation ‘can we build it?’ to the 2nd and even 3rd generation modules with the right performance and power to allow massive 1.6Tb systems deployment at scale.  This is further enabled by the emergence of 102Tb switch silicon with 224G SERDES supporting 64 ports of 1.6Tb.

All of these drive significant new demand for test and measurement, but one of the most significant changes will come with the module form factor.

Riding Heat Sink Will Dominate in 1.6Tb Class Optics

The OSFP1600 Integrated Heat Sink (IHS) has been the vanguard of 1.6Tb deployment, built on the success of this form factor at 400G and 800G.  However, to enable scaling in power and cooling, another approach must be taken.

OSFP1600 Riding Heat Sink (RHS) will start to dominate the deployment and volume of 1.6Tb class optics, so stable and high-performance support for OSFP1600 RHS is a MUST for the next stage of 1.6Tb.

Classic Integrated Heat Sink designs use inbuilt fins which use air from host system to cool the device.  Riding Heat Sink designs are lower profile with no fins – and provides system level cooling via a heat sink resident in the host device.  (Graphic courtesy of Amphenol).

RHS is Available in the ONE LabPro ONE-1600 1.6Tb Testing Module

VIAVI showcased native OSFP1600 RHS support at the recent CIOE show in China and we saw significant engagement with the broader ecosystem. It was also on display at ECOC25 in Copenhagen.  We have already conducted customer trials with our ONE LabPro ONE-1600 with native OSFP1600 RHS support, and the feedback has been good. No messy adapters that leave you guessing on BER performance and cooling –  and solid, reliable native support for IHS at scale.

Native OSFP1600 RHS support, combined with our highest performance 224G SERDES, our unique PHY and Ethernet at scale applications, and of course the ability to scale to 102Tb of nanosecond orchestrated bandwidth allows the ecosystem to continue to scale and ramp at 1.6Tb.
