Since VIAVI announced its ONE LabProONE-1600, dual OSFP1600 test system at ECOC 2024, we have been very busy supporting the ecosystem by developing and validating 1.6Tb/s modules around the world.

Decades of compounding experience – from 10Gb/s to 1.6Tb/s today – has given VIAVI a solid foundation and several unique applications. We always learn new things with each new speed, and 1.6Tb/s is no exception.

While we are in the very early stages of 1.6Tb/s testing, we have worked with multiple module vendors and various DSP types, and have built up practical knowledge in bringing 1.6Tb/s modules to life based on 212.5Gb PAM-4 electrical signaling. While the unframed applications provide a good baseline and help with connectivity, the framed applications with our special FEC tools and other analysis applications have proved invaluable in achieving excellent performance.

First FEC Impressions

This is just a start! Of course, after more tuning we saw much better results, but I am not going to share all the secrets!

The Path to Deployment at Scale

The past few months have been very exciting and we look forward to more success. It is clear that 1.6Tb/s with 212.5Gb/s electrical signaling is a viable technology with a legitimate path to large-scale deployment over the next few years. Small steps must continue, and we will see new challenges ahead with 100Tb/s class switch silicon (incidentally our ONE-1600 system can scale to 64 ports of 1.6TbE for 102Tb of nanosecond precision traffic generation). We designed a new architecture that combines the deep and unique physical layer tools of our legendary ONT products, but can scale up the stack and across ports to be ready for the next generation of silicon, switches and routers ahead.

A lot of science – and even a little magic – makes this all happen.  Please contact us using the link below if you are interested in learning more.

Don’t forget to look out for a 1.6Tb workshop we’ll be running in the Silicon Valley in 2025. We hope to see you next year!
