The Latest 6G Research from VIAVI and Partners at IEEE ICC 2025

This year’s IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC) is nearly upon us. The event takes the overall theme of “Communications Technologies 4Good”, with papers and presentations looking into not just the future of communications and how AI/robotics can supercharge it, but also technology solutions that can be used for public safety.
VIAVI is highly active across these domains, and at the event we will showcase several research projects and solutions that demonstrate how 6G, AI, Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN), intelligent twins, security and critical communications can be used to offer enhanced, more robust, more energy efficient services – even when working at their limits or under the threat of cyberattack.
With over a century in network test and optimization, VIAVI is playing a leading role in modeling, developing and enabling next-generation and mission-critical networks – and we are delighted to have the support of the ecosystem.
We will be demonstrating our technologies in close collaboration with leaders from across the network, device, infrastructure, system integrator, service and academic sectors.
VIAVI will be at booth #115 throughout the show from June 8-12. We look forward to seeing you there!
Partner Demonstrations
Neural Receiver:
We will be highlighting the transformative potential of AI at the RAN. For this, we will showcase energy-efficient neuromorphic receivers that can replace multiple signal-processing blocks, including channel estimation, equalization, and symbol demapping. This will be demonstrated using a single neural network that is optimized for AI-based modulations with benchmark-setting performance gains.
AI-Assisted Agile Propagation Modeling:
Following the joint creation of a city-scale digital twin for the training of 6G AI-native air interfaces, VIAVI and Northeastern University’s Institute for the Wireless Internet of Things will be examining AI and machine learning in radio propagation modeling and how it can accelerate the creation of complex channel models for high-fidelity dynamic real-time digital twins.
Sensing-Enhanced Augmented Perception for Beam Selection:
Working in partnership with Qualcomm, VIAVI will showcase the benefits of implementing digital twin technologies to provide accurate measurements that can enhance perception performance during beam selection.
Extended Reality (XR):
In collaboration with King’s College London, and Nokia Bell Labs, VIAVI has delivered the first-ever practical application of semantic communications for extended reality. This semantic communication framework has advanced multiple access for metaverse avatars, and in this demonstration, we highlight new methods for efficiently transmitting high-quality content to multiple users within the small bandwidths required for wireless extended reality (XR).
AI/ML-Based Beam Management:
Beam management is critical for exploiting the higher frequencies used for 6G and VIAVI has partnered with the A*STAR Institute for Infocomm Research to demonstrate 6G position-enhanced AI and machine learning-based beam management techniques for FR3 centimeter-wave bands. This includes the efficient fusion of communication measurements with sensing information from a real environment using an advanced neural network-based algorithm.
Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC)
ISAC enables the use of communication networks for the detection and localization of objects, supporting the development of situational awareness in autonomous systems and smart environments. VIAVI has developed a ISAC testing capability, leveraging our real-time ray tracing software.
Non-Terrestrial Networks and Open RAN:
Last, but certainly not least, VIAVI will present learnings from two projects undertaken with Rohde & Schwarz. Firstly, we will showcase how a joint digital twin testbed has been used to validate end-to-end connectivity and performance in non-terrestrial networks, examining reliability and performance across multiple orbits (LEO, MEO and GEO).
We will also examine how our joint Open RAN solutions provide top tier RF capability with industry leading mass-scale user equipment (UE) emulation, providing functional and performance network validation.
Additional Technology Being Showcased:
VIAVI’s expertise spans both cellular and land mobile radio – both in the lab and field. And in addition to the above collaborative demonstrations, we will also showcase solutions for secure position navigation and timing, as well as interference hunting, post-quantum cryptography testing, and radio test/assurance.
