What made you want to be an engineer?

Curiosity – I think I am an inherently curious about how things work!

When I was child, I was interested in taking things apart and then putting them back together. My mom was always curious why the clocks stopped every time when she came back home. In university I studied engineering and optical communications. It was not a popular choice, but I was interested in and curious about “fiber”.  And fortunately, I got a job in an optical company, JDSU that is now VIAVI! I am exactly where I want to be, to use my knowledge in optical to solve problems, make things simple and make life easier for our customers every day.

How would you describe “A Day in the Life” of your current job at VIAVI, and the impact your role has in helping customers or partners?

“Press button” – that is how an ex-colleague describes my day in the office!

In a nutshell, I explain technology and product positioning to both business and technical users. I ensure complete customer satisfaction through all stages of the sales process, visit customers either at their office to provide presentations, trainings and demos or in the field at in data centers, on the rooftops, in submarine landing stations and everywhere VIAVI customers are located. l thrive on solving problems with customers, not only helping customers. This engagement also helps me understand the technology and products on a deeper level.  I love that I am still learning every day, the tech world is a fast-changing and we all need to keep up with the pace and continue learning.

What is your favorite accomplishment or success story with a customer or partner?

My favorite had to be when a customer said “your product is good!”

This happened after struggling a few years, losing orders and market share in the 100G field test application area.  We learned from experience and did not give up while taking advantage of every single opportunity, this combined with product enhancement we were able to gain back market share in the Hong Kong region. One day a customer made a point to say to me, “Hey Lucia, your product is good and “dominates” the market, I see it everywhere in the field”. Customer acknowledgement is a great accomplishment and a proud moment!
