One year ago, VIAVI unveiled the industry’s first dual-port 1.6Tb test set at ECOC 2024, the ONE-1600, featuring live demos, 8 x 200G electrical lanes, and an OSFP1600 DR8 with optical loopback. Today, we continue to lead the 1.6Tb ecosystem with comprehensive PHY to Ethernet coverage scaling to 102Tb of test bandwidth aligned to the next generation of switch silicon.

Insights into Unique 1.6Tb Testing Challenges

We have been extremely active across the entire ecosystem, from chips to systems, supporting the industry’s deployment of 1.6Tb and 200G SERDES products.

During this initial wave, VIAVI gained valuable insights into the unique challenges of 200G SERDES-based systems as we collaborated with customers to bring their products to market. These challenges included tuning 200G links ahead of widespread adoption of intra-sublayer link training (ILT), and analyzing FEC tails in Ethernet links.

We’ve embedded this valuable knowledge into our second-generation ONE-1600IE. Powered by the latest silicon and enhanced applications, it’s fully equipped to support the next major 1.6Tb wave.

With the initial 1.6Tb ecosystem built as a pre-standard (802.3dj) implementation, it functioned more as an engineered solution— optimized without the complexity of broad vendor interoperability. However, as the IEEE nears finalization of the 802.3dj draft, particularly in critical areas such as ILT, inner FEC and 1.6Tb MAC with 100G PCS lanes, a new wave of challenges is emerging.

Major Inflection Point

The arrival of switch silicon leveraging 200G SERDES marks a major inflection point.  This technology enables next-generation 102Tb Ethernet switches, supporting up to 64 ports of 1.6Tb connectivity. VIAVI’s ONE-1600ER is purpose-built to meet the deep dive PHY validation demands of this transition. It scales seamlessly to deliver 100Tb of Ethernet test bandwidth, with nanosecond-level packet analysis and orchestration—ensuring precision at every layer.
