The roots of VIAVI’s wireless division – home to VIAVI Marconi Labs™ – can be traced back to Guglielmo Marconi, whose groundbreaking work laid the foundation for modern wireless transmission including radio and television broadcasting.
Marconi’s wireless telegraph revolution proved that long-distance transmission could work without physical wires. His first transatlantic signal in 1901 covered 2,100 miles, setting the stage for today’s global telecoms networks.
Marconi founded The Wireless Telegraph & Signal Company in 1897, which later became Marconi Instruments, from which VIAVI Marconi Labs has evolved. Marconi isn’t just in our name; it’s hardwired in our identity.

VIAVI has been at the forefront of wireless technology for decades, from winning the Queens Award for our microwave innovation in the 1990s to developing the world’s leading UE emulator for base station testing, from 3G to today’s 3GPP 5GA releases.
