Within three years, experts predict that more than 86% of all workloads will be processed in the cloud. Cloud workloads will more than triple, with workload density (workload per physical server) increasing from 5.1 to 8.4. That’s a lot of important services moving into and growing within the cloud. It is expected that customer expectations will also grow, as service delivery becomes more complex and new service offerings become more central to everyday life through the Internet of Things.

Conversations we are having with many of our customers are dominated by all-things-cloud. As service providers continue to grapple with these challenges, we expect to be talking to an increasing number of them about our TeraVM virtual application emulation.

In a nutshell, TeraVM is used by service providers (both public and private) and network equipment manufacturers to validate performance in the cloud.

Cloud environments require a much more elastic approach to validation than the traditional test environment, which is key to what is driving our ongoing development of TeraVM. In virtualization hypervisors are key enablers for cloud infrastructures and service providers need a next generation test solution that can assess the performance, availability and scale of complex services running on multiple hypervisors within these virtual environments.

Combining virtual application emulation and portable cybersecurity with the broadest hypervisor support, TeraVM enables assessment in OpenStack, VMWare, Microsoft Azure, Amazon AWS and other cloud platforms. It can generate over a terabit of stateful application and malicious traffic on-demand, with the ability to scale to emulate millions of real-world users.

By emulating real users signing into a network and then going about their general business, including email, web browsing and general tasks related to their industry, providers can gain accurate insight into the impact of scaled usage. These scaled usage scenarios coupled with a software defined framework, like NFV will provide valuable insight in to the weaknesses or bottlenecks in the overall virtualization environment.

Scaling cloud infrastructures involves many technology decisions: hardware architectures (aggregated versus disaggregated), virtualisation technologies (opensource versus proprietary hypervisors), automation frameworks (orchestration and management tool selection). The complexity surrounding the choice of the base infrastructure is further amplified when the true purpose of the cloud deployment (i.e. the commercial service offering) is included.

With so many unknowns, it is essential that the right test and measurement solution vendor is selected from the outset, a vendor who is committed and understands virtualization.

Virtualising network functions, security and testing directly in the cloud environment provides significant CAPEX and OPEX savings and helps customers migrate from testing virtualized networks with legacy proprietary hardware test tools, to an elastic virtualized test architecture.

Our TeraVM customers can dynamically scale and reallocate test capacity in ways which is not possible in the traditional fixed lab environment. A virtualised or ‘pooled’ resource model significantly increases the utilisation rates of testing assets – from a typical 20% rate up to 80-90% – as resources can be dynamically reallocated.

At this year’s Cisco Live event, VIAVI’s TeraVM team will be available to discuss the challenges providers face in meeting the ‘cloud challenge’ and the importance of thorough validation solutions to enable the safe and accurate launch of this new architecture.
